Born in Albany, New York, Ashton Holmes was struck by the magic of theater and film at age 4 when his mother took him to see "Peter Pan", and it was clinched by a desire to play Luke Skywalker when he saw Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977). He subsequently took acting lessons at age 6 and began appearing in community theater. He also attended the Albany Academy.
He did some modeling in the Albany area, appearing in advertisements for the local newspaper.
Ashton was in the Albany-based band, Method of Groove. He was the singer and also played guitar until he injured his hand. The band broke up around 2004.
Played "Mark" on a touring company of the hit Broadway musical, Rent.
His mother, Susan, is a social worker. Through his maternal grandmother, Ashton is a ninth cousin, once removed, of English actor Sam Claflin. Also on his mother's side, Ashton is a descendant of businessman John Jacob Astor (who is Ashton's five times great-grandfather), colonial official Robert Livingston the Elder, New York mayor/governor Wilhelmus Beekman, and other prominent New Yorkers of the colonial era.
