Jonathan James Simmons was born November 28, 1986 in Montgomery, Alabama, to Cindy and Ben Simmons. He was raised in Dallas, Texas.
His first film in Los Angeles was entitled "My Ambition". When casting notices went out, there was a misprint stating that the production was looking for a lead female to play Julie Walters. He contacted the production office in hopes they would have a part for a male and was asked to audition for the lead. Producers cast him on the spot and never bothered to rerun the correct casting notice, which in turn, got him his first manager.
His big break came on only his second feature film audition, Evan Almighty (2007), in which he played Dylan Baxter, opposite Steve Carell and Lauren Graham. Since then, he has had major roles in many Hollywood films, including Hotel for Dogs (2009), Jennifer's Body (2009), 21 Jump Street (2012), The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), and The To Do List (2013).
Favorite actors are Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, and River Phoenix.
Beat out Bo Barrett for the role of Chip Dove in Jennifer's Body (2009).
He is of English and Scots-Irish ancestry. His family is from Mississippi.
I got like a list of things at the beginning. There were ten things that Bryan made for each one of us, and he drew us our own personal picture of our character that was in color. And uh, I just have a copy of it, I think that they're going to do something special with the originals at the end, like presenting them to us.
Everybody has a stunt except me. Every single person has a stunt, but I don't have a stunt, there's nothing. No wire, no pulling. I try to get in on the danger, but there's nothing.
Yeah, we've become really good friends. Our characters start dating in the book, and um, yeah, I think we - and we made up little back stories to our characters and little outtakes that we'd bring up to Edgar as a joke, and you know, kind of see different sides of stuff. So yeah, we have a really good time.
